Under the COVID – 19 response fund of the Health System Enhancement Project (HSEP - ADB) refurbishment of short stay ward at Provincial General Hospital Kalutara (PGH), converted to four (04) bedded High Dependency Unit (HDU) with negative pressure facility.
Refurbishment was funded by HSEP and equipment for the refurbished HDU was provided by the Ministry of Health and Private donors. Each bed is equipped with wall oxygen, wall suction, an overhead multi monitor and ICU type bed. A separate ventilation system with fresh air and negative pressure to each compartment with air- conditioning is also provided. Each bed is capable of providing care to ventilated patient with multi organ support.
This facility is managed by the Emergency care Physicians. Patients are cared for until their COVID PCR reports are available. Patients with positive PCR results and show symptoms, then they are moved to an ICU. Patients who need extended high dependency care for more than 4 hours, but less than 24 hours will be treated in the HDU and will be stepped down to normal care ward.
Apart from HDU, HSEP funded the extension of Medical Gas delivery system and provided equipment to PGH Kalutara.
