DHB Galenbindunuwewa is located 42 km away from Anuradhapura, the Island's first ancient capital, caters to 28,000 people from 21 GN divisions of Galenbindunuwewa Divisional Secretariat in Anuradhapura District of North Central Province.
The hospital was initially started as a Central Dispensary and moved to the current location in 1969 with a maternity ward. Later, the hospital was expanded and following facilities are currently available. Male ward, Female and Children ward, Bhikkhu Ward and Outpatient Department (OPD).
With the development of services, the demand for services has gone up beyond the capacity of the service provider. The following table illustrates the demand for different services provided by the hospital during year 2019 and 2020.
The marked decline of the inward patients in 2020 was due to COVID 19 pandemic situation of the country.
As a part of resolving the capacity issues in the DHB Galenbindunuwewa, North Central Provincial Health Authorities planned to increase the capacity for OPD patients. The proposal has been submitted to the Health System Enhancement Project (HSEP) funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) and financial assistance facilitated by HSEP for expansion of the hospital including renovation of ETU and the Dispensary.
Construction of new building commenced on 1st of September 2019 and was completed on 12th January 2021. The total cost of the Project was LKR 20.89 million and was declared opened on 25th January 2021.
The new building provides separate space for clinic facilities as well as for patients visiting OPD daily. Upgraded dispensary provides better quality services than earlier.
As a national requirement currently, this facility is used for COVID 19 patients on temporary basis.
